Feral Felt offers public school classes, homeschooling classes & camps for children as well as adult workshops & intensives. Feral Felt founder, Natalia Robinson, teaches quarterly afterschool sessions in fiber arts in the Bellingham Public Schools through BAAY EduARTS. As well as adult and children's classes at The Ragfinery. The following are classes that are available for hire:
SCHOOL FIBER ARTS PROGRAMS
Felting I | Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 | 5-15 students max | $15 materials fee
Working with water, soap, and hands, we sculpt wool. This is one of the oldest forms of utilitarian art. It is forgiving, unique, and calms the senses. In this art enrichment program, students will learn the basics of working with wool. Some potential projects are felted beads, felted soap, and needle felt animal portraits. No experience needed.
Felting II | Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 | 5-15 students max | $15 materials fee
Some felting experience is needed for this class. Students will work with water and soap to sculpt wool. Potential projects for this art enrichment program are felt pot holders, felted vessels, felted bags, and needle felted animals.
Crochet I | Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 | 5-8 students max | $15 materials fee
Students will explore the basics of crochet using yarn, hooks, and imagination, and will practice through a variety of craft projects. Potential projects include finger-crocheted rope, an octopus, flowers, wristbands, headbands and jar cozies. No experience needed.
Crochet II| Grades 3-5, and 6-8 | 5-8 students max | $15 materials fee
Students will advance their basic crochet knowledge using yarn, hooks, and imagination, and will practice through a variety of craft projects. Potential projects include crochet flowers, crowns, jar cozies, and hats. Prior experience needed.
Knitting I| Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 | 5-8 students max | $15 materials fee
Students will explore the basics of knitting. They will learn how to do finger knitting, use proper yarn tension, cast on, cast off and the garter stitch. Potential projects include finger knit snakes, tube knit finger puppets, belts, and a knit rabbit.
Knitting II| Grades 3-5, and 6-8 | 5-8 students max | $15 materials fee
Students will advance their basic knitting knowledge. They will learn to develop consistent yarn tension, cast on, cast off, stripe and the garter, purl and stockinette stitches. Potential projects include a dishcloth scrubby, infinity cowl and hat.
Weaving| Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 | 5-10 students max | $15 materials fee
Students will learn the basics of how to weave with simple and fun projects. Potential projects include woven rocks, stick loom weaving, belts, pouches and rugs.
Natural Dyeing | Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 | 12-15 students max | $15 materials fee
Plants were once our only source of color for cloth and paints! In this class, students will learn the process of preparing wool for dyeing and then experiment with colors from the natural world. Each child will complete this enrichment program with naturally dyed fibers and yarn.
COMMUNITY CLASS OFFERINGS
CROCHET BEGINNINGS-Ready to learn a new handcraft? Learn how to make a slip knot, a chain stitch, single crochet and double crochet. Come make a headband with fiber arts and begin developing your crochet skills. Ages 8+
CROCHET CROWNS-Come make a crown fit for a queen or king. In this class we will review over single, double, and triple crochet and the picot stitch. Learn how to size your crown for a child or adult. Prior crochet experience necessary. Ages 8+
BEGINNING KNITTING-Ready to learn a new handcraft? Learn how to use proper yarn tension, cast on and begin a garter stitch scarf/cowl. Come create your first knit garment and begin developing your knitting skills. Ages 8+
FELT SCULPTED HATS- Learn the fine art of sculptural felt and make your own custom made felt hat. Be led into the glorious art of handmade Millinery. We will use locally carded wool and learn resist felt techniques. Blocking and shaping techniques will also be taught with the use of antique hat molds. Ages 8+
FELT PRAYER FLAGS-Come create a symbolic felt masterpiece. Bring an image that meaningful for you. An animal, a self portrait, or a symbol Both wet felting and needle felting techniques shall be covered. Bring your creativity and imagination. Ages 8+
FELT BEAD BRACELETS-Give your children the opportunity to play with wool. We will learn the basic art of creating felt beads. Ages 2+
EMBELLISHED NEEDLE FELTED GARMENTS-Bring an article of clothing made of wool and learn how to embellish using felting needles and wool painting techniques. Ages 8+
NEEDLE FELTED SWEATER SKIRTS- Come learn how to upcycle a sweater into a warm and beautiful skirt! Cashmere, merino wool, and lambswool sweaters make for a cozy and fashionable winter wardrobe. Needle felting adds a touch of wool embroidery that makes for a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art. Ages 13+
FELT BEAD EARRINGS- Come learn how to work with wool, silk, and mohair and create your very own unique felt beads. Then using basic jewelry making techniques we will transform them into earrings. Ages 8+
FELTED SPRING FLOWERS- Come make your own felted flowers and adorn yourself! We will take felted sweaters and transform them into beautiful flowers. These flowers can be made into hair accessories, hat pins, or used to decorate clothing. Why pick a flower when you can make one! Upcycling at its best. Ages 8+
FELT SOAPS- Create a natural exfoliant and soften your skin with felted soap. Your soap bars will last longer! Come learn the art of resist felting.
TREASURE POUCH-Learn finger crochet, needle felting and hand sewing techniques. We will create a felt wool pouch and write out our names with wool! This can be used to store special treasures and secret findings. Ages 7+
